Michael Hoffman’s striped paintings are built through the repeated application of layered color, creating surfaces that are both visually dynamic and materially rich. Transparent and opaque passages overlap and interact, producing subtle shifts, optical vibration, and a sense of movement across the surface.
Process plays a central role in the work. Through successive layers of paint, Hoffman constructs compositions that balance structure with the unpredictable behaviour of the material itself. The resulting surfaces reveal the gradual evolution of each painting, recording both intention and chance.
A luminous, high-gloss finish further activates the paintings. Color captures and reflects ambient light, causing the work to shift with changing viewpoints and conditions. The interaction between color, material, and light rewards sustained viewing, revealing new relationships and nuances over time.
While the front of each painting presents a balanced arrangement of color, the edges reveal the physical process behind its creation. Layers of paint accumulate, drip, and build outward, preserving moments that appear suspended in time. These accumulated edges give the works a subtle sculptural presence that exists between painting and object.
