Biography

Charlotte Terrell - Artists - Pryor Fine Art

Charlotte Terrell creates idealized, fictional landscapes that evoke a universal sense of familiarity and capture a present moment in time. Her work celebrates the tactile nature of plaster, the labor-intensive process of polishing surfaces, and the interplay of paint and glossy translucent glazes.

Growing up in Columbus, Mississippi, Terrell developed an early admiration for fine art and the historical architecture of antebellum homes. Waverly Plantation, once owned by her great-great-grandfather, introduced her to the rich world of 19th-century painted finishes and fine craftsmanship.

After earning a degree from the University of Georgia, Charlotte worked as a landscape architect for the New York City Department of Parks, contributing to the restoration of historic landscapes like Central Park. She later pursued further art education at Parsons School of Design and apprenticed under master finisher Ina Marks at the Isabel O'Neil School of Antique and Art Restoration, refining her skills in mid-19th-century decorative painting.

Terrell’s expertise in decorative painting naturally evolved into fine art, where she incorporates plaster, polished surfaces, and layers of juicy paint and translucent glazes to create dreamlike landscapes. Her paintings evoke the timeless beauty of 19th-century England, Central Park, and her ancestral home, drawing on influences from both her heritage and professional background.
