Raised in a small farming community in the upper Snake Valley beneath the Tetons of southeastern Idaho, Bruce Brainard developed an early connection to the expansive landscapes of the American West. His work draws from the traditions of American landscape painting, particularly artists such as George Inness and the Luminists, as well as the spiritual sensibility of Caspar David Friedrich.
Brainard is known for contemplative landscapes and seascapes defined by expansive skies, quiet fields, and solitary natural forms. Working with a restrained realism, his paintings emphasize atmosphere, light, and the subtle movement of wind and water. Through these elements, he creates images that invite reflection and stillness.
As Brainard has said, “I have found the greatest emotions not necessarily to be the loud, the sentimental, or even the profane, but rather the quiet, the authentic, and the sacred.”
Brainard has worked professionally as an artist for over 25 years. He received his BFA and MFA from Brigham Young University and lives and works in Utah. His work has been exhibited widely across the United States and is included in numerous public and corporate collections, including Credit Suisse, UPS Corporation, The Ritz-Carlton, Herman Hospital, and Brigham Young University.
